An Announcement

Well, I'm sorry to say that this will be my last post for a long while. I'm finding that I have to let the "smaller" tasks in life go, such as blogging & email. I just don't have the time to get housework, homeschooling & caring for the boys done if I take time to blog & monitor my email. I may have Julia start blogging every now & again, as I hinted at the beginning of the school year.

As my last blog I would like to tell you that school is going very well. I haven't started anything formal with the boys, but they are included as much as possible, for example when we perform science experiments. I cannot believe it is already November. And I have a funny story to leave you with: Last night on our ride home from church Nathaniel asked about meals for this week. Bill asked him if he wanted something special for supper this week & Nathaniel replied, "Yes, Brass Compass!" (For those of you who aren't in the know, The Brass Compass is a local restaurant that serves breakfast & supper & we eat there probably once a month.)

Gina's "In Other Words" MI-5

1. Other than the usual "crunch", what one word best describes the sound when you walk in snow? Tell us about a time you had with/in snow.
Crunch is just the best word, but I will keep thinking & maybe update my answer (a thesaurus was of no help to me). My favorite memories of snow are from my childhood. I had the most fun in the snow from about age 8 until 12. We would build forts, tunnels & snow people, & have great snowball fights. Now I dislike the snow intensely.

2. What one word best describes the sound of leaves as you walk through them. Try not to use the word "rustle, rustling". Share a story having to do with you and leaves.
Scrunch is the best word I could think of the describe walking through leaves. My favorite memories of leaves have to do with my children. I love watching their pure joy as they jump into a leaf pile.

3. Choosing another word besides the word "slosh", give us your best (one) word for walking through rain and puddles. We'd love to read a story about you and the rain and/or puddles.
When I think of rain & puddles the one word that comes to mind is splash. My favorite memory of puddles is the first vacation that we took with Julia. She was almost 2 & we went to York with my parents camper & the first evening there was a brief rainstorm that left great puddles & Julia & I went puddle stomping.

4. Yes, there's sweltering. But pick one other word to describe the humid summer heat. If you're able, tell us a funny story related to you and the summer heat. If nothing comes to mind, tell us what you do to beat the heat.
Stifling is another word for the summer heat (I'll admit this is the only one that I had to use the thesaurus for). My favorite way to beat the heat is to sit in front of a fan with my feet in a bucket of cold water.

5. Halloween is fast approaching. Other than the word "spooky", choose one word that describes the Halloween atmosphere. Share with us a favorite Halloween costume you wore. If you've never participated by wearing a costume, let us know the wildest costume you've ever seen.
Creepy is how I describe Halloween. My favorite costume is when I dressed up like the Statue of Liberty. I made my own costume, I think I was 10 or 11.

On My Soapbox

I know, I know...I haven't blogged for a long time! So today I will give you lots of posts, beginning with a rant about Obama!

One of my favorite radio talk show hosts, Glenn Beck, said:"If you care anything about America & you love the American way of life, don't vote for Obama." I have many reasons for not liking his politics, but this one really got me steamed--Obama voted against the Illinois Born Alive initiative. This act would allow doctors to give care to babies who survive abortion. Here is a good article that lists the reasons why he wouldn't vote for it. http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2008/01/top-10-reasons.html

Here are more of his views on the right to life: "When Pastor Rick Warren asked the Illinois senator when a baby gets human rights he said, 'Well, uh, you know, I think that whether you're looking at it from a theological perspective or, uh, a scientific perspective, uh, answering that question with specificity, uh, you know, is, is, uh, above my pay grade.' " And this statement made at a town hall meeting a few months ago: "after comments insisting that information on contraception be included alongside abstinence education, Obama stated, 'I've got two daughters, 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at the age of 16.' "
To me it seems he's saying, unless the baby has been born by "normal" means & is wanted, it is not a person & has no rights.

This leads me to a recent Oprah show with a woman who forgot her 2 yr. old, all day, in a hot car. The toddler died, yet the woman was not held responsible. I haven't heard yet of one case where the parent was charged with a crime (unless it can be proven they did it on purpose). Why not? Because apparently killing the child is punishment enough. Yet, people who leave their animals in the car are harshly criticized & often fined, & sometimes get jail time. When did it become OK to kill the children, but not the animals? It seems to me that so much of life is backward, what used to be wrong is right & even if it isn't right it has to be tolerated. Being judgemental is a bad thing, even though it's supposed to be a tool to determine right from wrong, good from evil & moral from immoral.

OK, I'm climbing off my high horse for now, but stay tuned!

Jim's MI-5

1. Name something a friend or loved one did for you in the last month that
made you feel good.
My husband does things on a daily basis that make me feel good--helping with the kids without complaining, washing the laundry everyday, & loving me with his whole being are just a few.

2. Name something you did for a friend or loved one in the last month and
how did it make them feel?
As a wife & mom I do many nice things for my family that make them feel loved.

3. Tell us about the first childhood family vacation that you remember.
If you don't have a memory of that then tell us the first family event
memory you have. Don't forget to include details about that experience
that stick out in your mind.
Every summer for years we did the same thing--camping somewhere between Storyland & Santa's Village for a week & hitting all the theme parks in the area.

4. Kids get hurt. Tell us a time you recall as a kid when you injured
yourself.
My worst injury was at summer camp when I was about 10, I was running on the side of a road after picking berries with my cabin & I tripped (probably on my shoelaces) & I scraped up my right knee badly enough that I still have a scar.

5. Tell us something you want to do before the snow flies. If you livein an area that might not get snow then before Christmas will do.
Get the heavy curtains hung in the living room.

Paddy's Fall MI-5

Paddy says: "Ahhh, the first few days of Fall. One of my favorite times of the year, every year ... so this week's 5 is of an autumnal nature."

1. Describe your single fondest childhood memory of the fall season.
Sometime between ages 8 &11 my parents took us to a local apple cider press & we not only got to watch the cider being made, but also got to "help", & then take a jug home.

2. What are your two favorite things to eat that are specific to this time of year?
I cannot think of a single thing that I only eat this time of year. I'll have to ponder this a bit more.

3. Name three items that you dig out of the closet and wear now that the weather is turning.
A sweater, socks, & long pants.

4. Tell us your four favorite activities that you enjoy between the Autumnal Equinox and Halloween (November AIN'T Fall here in Maine folks!).
Apple picking, leaf peeping, watching my kids jump in leaf piles, & drinking apple cider.

5. Finally, what are the top five things that you need to get done before the winter hits?
  • Hang up the lined curtains in the living room.
  • Get activities organized so I'm not scrambling on those cold, snowy days when we can't go anywhere.
  • Finish sorting & packing away all the summer clothes.
  • Pack up all the summer toys.
  • Fold socks & put them away. (Right now they are all in a basket in my room. Only Bill wears socks consistently throughout the summer.)
