Christmas Wrap Up

It started with Bill coming home on Christmas Eve at a little after noon. He placed a couple of boxes on the table & said something along the lines of, "this is one of your gifts & I think you should have it early. I hope you like it, but it's kind of a gift for both of us & it's not something you've asked for & you may hate it." Now here's the background: last year he gave me a warming towel rack. Now while I appreciate the thought & the fact that he bought me something, it wasn't anything I had even heard of, much less asked for, & it's nice, especially in the winter, but not one of my favorite gifts. And he knows it. So I opened the box with a bit of apprehension & was pleasantly surprised to find it was something I wanted, even though I had not ever asked for it: a new digital camera. It's a Pentax Digital SLR. http://imageshare.lumunon.com/uploads/_cd73-pentax-k100-dslr-camera-1.jpg
I have wanted a new camera for awhile, but hadn't asked because I knew this kind of camera is usually really expensive, but he found it online refurbished for a great price & snatched it up. I think I really surprised him when I threw my arms around his neck crying. He was definitely not expecting that good of a reaction. Now I just need to take the time to read the manual so I can learn to take really good pictures.

Then we went our traditional trip to Spruce Head to have supper at Ma's, candlelight service at church (at which our pastor & his wife sang a beautiful duet, something they had never done at our church before), then back to Ma's for presents. The funniest part of the evening was when the boys took the books from Aunt Ginny (Nathaniel received "Pride & Prejudice" & Matthew received "Wuthering Heights". Aunt Ginny gives the kids a classic for Christmas & their birthday) & kept wandering off to "read." We would tell them their was another present, they would open it then ask if they could go back to a quiet place to read! At one point Matthew opened a gift one handed so that he could keep his finger in the book with his other hand! We came home & were exhausted, but because I had the boys take a nap they were wound up, so it took a bit of effort to get them to bed, after Bill read "The Polar Express" (which we have always read since we've been married, instead of the Night Before Christmas), the kids hung their stockings & then put out cookies for Santa. This was the first year that I wasn't up wrapping presents until the wee hours.

The next morning my parents, two nieces & Nana arrived at our house (unfortunately my brother & his wife both had to work, but at least we got their kids!). We opened stockings, had my banana bread & my mom's fruitcake for breakfast, then opened presents. We had a couple of hours for the kids to play with some of their new toys, then we headed to my mother-in-law's where we had a great turkey dinner & then opened more presents. I was surprised by a big box that turned out to be scrapbooking stuff that I had been told wouldn't be here before Christmas. I had fun putting it all away today & dreaming about everything I will be able to do with it in the new year.

We arrived home around supper time & the kid's ate leftovers & played a long time with their new toys. Julia was given a play kitchen & Bill set it up for her. Today I took down the tree & all the decorations so that I could unpack & organize everything. The kids are going to my parents on Monday for a couple of days so that I can do a big cleaning & organizing before school starts again. That about wraps it up. It was a great holiday & I am thankful for all the people who love us & wanted to celebrate with us.
